Voluntary Enslavement

Technology's fast development dissolves freedom and diversity

The release of atomic power has changed everything except our way of thinking ... The solution to this problem lies in the heart of mankind.
— Albert Einstein

We have been creating an astonishing amount of powerful new technologies over the last few generations. Many great advantages have come out of this development. But are we capable of handling this unprecedented flood of technological innovation?

The gap between what we are capable of creating and what we are capable of managing is growing. Worsening environmental problems are testimony to this drifting apart. Other problems that concern humanity are escalating as well. How much more evidence is needed to acknowledge that the current manner of technological development is unmanageable, that the speed and extent at which we innovate cannot be carefully handled? The result is an unnecessary and perilous increase in amount and severity of negative effects.

Overpopulation, electronics dependency, mass surveillance and erosion of privacy, arms races, global warming, rising energy needs, pollution, industrial agriculture and industrial animal husbandry, overuse of natural resources, lifestyle diseases, species extinction, etc. These and many more problems have a common root: the power of our technologies.

Apart from developments like those just listed, there is another basic threat arising from our fast and broad technological progression: the elimination of freedom and diversity.

The more technology we invite into our lives, the more we let it determine and standardize our existences, the more that dictating and standardizing reduces freedom and diversity.
